Washington: President-elect Donald Trump criticized outgoing President Joe Biden’s decision to commute the death sentences of 37 individuals on federal death row. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed disbelief at Biden’s actions, stating, “Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our Country.” He described the decision as senseless, especially given the severity of the crimes committed by those individuals.

Biden announced the commutations, converting the death sentences into life sentences without parole, just a day before Trump’s comments. In a statement, Biden expressed his condolences for the victims and their families but emphasized his firm belief, shaped by his extensive legal experience, that the federal death penalty should be abolished. He affirmed, “In good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted.”

In a follow-up post, Trump vowed that upon his inauguration, he would instruct the Justice Department to aggressively pursue the death penalty to protect communities from violent offenders. He declared, “We will be a Nation of Law and Order again!”

It’s important to note that these commutations apply only to individuals facing federal death sentences, while a total of around 2,250 inmates are on death row across the entire country, including state death rows, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
