Sydney: Two men have tragically lost their lives in separate drowning incidents in Queensland, northeastern Australia.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) reported that emergency services were alerted at 6:40 p.m. local time on Sunday after an 18-year-old man fell approximately 15 meters down an embankment into a river in Maudsland, located 55 km south of Brisbane. Despite medical assistance from paramedics, the young man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) noted that the man had been using a rope swing from a rock embankment when the accident occurred.
Earlier that same day, a 55-year-old man died after slipping and falling 30 meters from a waterfall in Behana Gorge, over 1,300 km northwest of Brisbane. Emergency services were called to Clamshell Falls, a popular swimming spot, at 1:30 p.m. after he was reported missing in the water. His body was found about an hour later during a search operation. Medical assistance was provided, but he was declared deceased at the scene. The QPS indicated that both incidents are being treated as non-suspicious, and reports will be submitted to the coroner.
Additionally, on the southwest coast of Australia, two individuals drowned at a notoriously dangerous beach in Western Australia (WA). On Saturday, three people were swimming at Conspicuous Cliff Beach, 355 km south of Perth, when they were caught in a perilous current around 2:40 p.m. Local residents managed to pull the trio from the water before police arrived and began CPR. Unfortunately, a 44-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman could not be revived and were declared dead at the scene, while a 42-year-old man was successfully resuscitated and taken to the hospital. All three were known to each other and were visiting from the Perth area. The beach is situated in an area known for strong waves and currents and is not monitored by lifeguards.
