The Punjab government has sent a letter to the central government rejecting the draft of the central agriculture market policy. Punjab Govt rejkected the draft citing that it was similar to the now repealed contentious three farm laws.
The Punjab government has raised questions in the letter that draft doesn’t takes account of the minimum support price (MSP) of crops which is most important for the farmers of Punjab. In the new agricultural market policy blueprint, private mandis have been encouraged to make the market committees of Punjab irrelevant, which is not acceptable to the state.
Govt further added that Punjab has a strong mandi system of its own and the draft proposed to impose a limit on the mandi fees, which will harm the network of mandis and rural infrastructure in Punjab.
It is also written in the letter that the Punjab government has strong objections to the encouragement of contract farming and declaring private silos as open market yards in the new agricultural market policy blueprint. There has also been a demand to cancel the central blueprint in the context of the impact on the commission of the commission agents.
The draft policy was sent by the Centre to the state government on November 25 last year. Centre had asked for comments by December 15. Since the draft policy had many contentious provisions, the state government had sought additional time to respond and today in formal letter Punjab Government has rejected the central agricultural draft policy.
