New Delhi: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, announced that India’s organic farming export value could reach Rs 20,000 crore within the next three years. In a speech marking the launch of the 8th edition of the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) in the capital, he referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks from last year’s Independence Day, which highlighted the global significance of organic farming for individual health and soil restoration.

Goyal introduced a new NPOP portal and an ‘Organic Promotion Portal’ designed to enhance visibility and streamline operations for those involved in organic agriculture. He emphasized that organic practices contribute to sustainable farming, helping to address issues like water scarcity and the detrimental effects of excessive fertilizers and pesticides on soil quality and crop productivity.

The minister acknowledged farmers’ critical role in food security and confirmed the government’s commitment to promoting organic farming. He noted that farmers who transition to organic methods have experienced higher yields and greater income.

Additionally, the event featured the launch of TraceNet 2.0, an upgraded online traceability system for improved regulatory oversight, and the redesigned APEDA portal, which enhances user experience for stakeholders in agriculture and processed food. The newly designed AgriXchange portal was also introduced, providing more accessible data analysis and reporting for agricultural exports.

Goyal stressed the importance of effective packaging and marketing for organic products to ensure that farmers receive fair compensation for their goods, adding that this value chain could also create jobs and elevate India’s standing in the global market.
