New Delhi: The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) convened an important meeting to finalize the remaining candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections set for February 5.
Held at the BJP headquarters, the meeting included prominent leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with notable Delhi BJP figures.
Sources indicate that the discussions mainly centered around the finalization of candidates for remaining Delhi constituencies.
The political landscape is gearing up for a heated contest between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP, which is striving to regain power in Delhi after over 20 years. The BJP is emphasizing its “Parivartan” (change) slogan and targeting the AAP over various allegations, particularly linked to the liquor policy scandal.
So far, the BJP has announced 29 candidates for the Delhi Assembly elections, setting the scene for a competitive multi-party race. Among the notable candidates are Kailash Gahlot, recently resigned from AAP, contesting from Bijwasan, and Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, running against AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit in New Delhi. Other significant contests include Ramesh Bidhuri opposing CM Atishi and Congress’s Alka Lamba in Kalkaji, and various candidates in constituencies like Rohini, Gandhinagar, and Jangpura.
The final list of candidates for contested constituencies is expected to be released on Saturday, January 12, with ongoing discussions for 8-12 additional constituencies. A core group meeting led by BJP President JP Nadda and Amit Shah will take place to wrap up these discussions.
On January 4, the BJP had already announced its first list of 29 candidates for the 70-member Assembly. The meeting also included input from Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, Organisation Secretary Pawan Rana, and other core members.
The Assembly elections will occur in a single phase on February 5, with results expected on February 8. In the last Assembly elections in 2020, the AAP achieved a significant victory, winning 62 of 70 seats, while the BJP secured just eight and the Congress failed to win any seats. Voter turnout was recorded at 62.82%, which was a drop from the previous elections.
