Shimla: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today chaired a regional conference on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in New Delhi. Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also joined virtually from Naidun. During this, Himachal CM Sukhu said, there has been a 340 percent increase in NDPS cases in the last decade.
He said, there has been an increase from about 500 cases in 2012 to 2,200 cases in 2023. A disturbing trend towards synthetic drugs is being seen. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to deal with drug trafficking and said that interstate border areas have become hotspots for illegal activities.
Himachal makes NDPS Act stringent: CM
The Chief Minister said that drug trafficking often overlaps with organized crime, which is a threat to the sovereignty and security of the country. He said that Himachal has amended Section 37 of the NDPS Act, 1985 to remove legal loopholes, which allow habitual offenders to get bail. This amendment has strengthened the legal framework, making it more stringent and preventive.
Work started to stop drug trafficking: Sukhu
The Chief Minister said that the state government has started implementing the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, which remained unused in the past. This Act enables the detention of repeat offenders involved in drug trafficking, thereby protecting public safety.
Property earned by selling drugs was confiscated
CM Sukhu said that Himachal has confiscated property worth crores of rupees illegally earned by smugglers by selling drugs. Property worth Rs 16 crore was seized in the last three years.
8 states joined the virtual conference
Eight northern states and union territories joined the conference on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Delhi.
