The Taiwan-China issue represents a complex and long-standing geopolitical conflict focused on Taiwan’s sovereignty. Officially termed the Republic of China (ROC), Taiwan functions with its own government, military, and economy, operating effectively as an independent state. However, China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and upholds the “One China” policy, claiming there is only one China with Beijing as its capital. This situation has led to decades of tension, particularly since the Chinese Civil War (1945-1949), when the ROC government retreated to Taiwan following the Communist Party’s rise to power in mainland China. Beijing has persistently aimed for reunification with Taiwan, employing diplomatic, economic, and military strategies to isolate Taiwan internationally. In contrast, Taiwan, backed by a considerable portion of its population, continues to uphold its independence.
