Sunil Jakhar resigned from Congress on 14 May 2022. After this, he joined BJP on 19 May. In Delhi, he was made to join the party by BJP President JP Nadda. Jakhar was in Congress for a long time before this. However, in the year 2021, when Congress removed Captain Amarinder Singh from the CM chair in Punjab, Jakhar’s name was in the race for CM.

However, later Jakhar himself had alleged that Ambika Soni opposed him because he was a Hindu. Soni said that Punjab is a Sikh state, so there should be a Sikh CM, after which Charanjit Channi was made the CM. Since then, Jakhar remained angry and then separated from the Congress.
