New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on January 20 in Washington, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

According to the MEA, “On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will attend the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States of America.” The minister is also expected to meet with representatives from the incoming administration and other dignitaries during his visit.

Donald Trump will take the presidential oath at noon on January 20, officiated by Chief Justice John Roberts on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Vice President-elect J.D. Vance will also be sworn in prior to Trump.

Last month, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) announced the theme for the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies as “Our Enduring Democracy: A Constitutional Promise,” honoring the Founding Fathers’ dedication to preserving democracy.

In tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100, U.S. flags will be flown at half-staff during the inauguration, as ordered by President Joe Biden. This observance is set to last for 30 days, ending at sunset on January 28.

Trump’s victory in the 2024 election was certified by Congress on January 6, officially validating the Electoral College results from November’s election. The certification process, overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris, who was Trump’s opponent in the race, was brief and garnered little attention.

The swearing-in ceremony signifies Trump’s return to the Oval Office as he begins his second term as President of the United States.
