Ahmedabad: Coldplay has broken the record for the largest stadium concerts of the 21st century after performing two nights at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, according to Live Nation.

The band, making their first-ever appearance in India, played to 111,581 fans on the first night (January 25) and 111,989 fans on the second night (January 26), bringing the total attendance to over 223,000 fans across both concerts. This achievement narrowly surpasses the previous record held by George Strait, who performed to 110,905 fans at Kyle Field in Texas in June. However, Strait’s show still holds the record for the largest stadium concert in the US.

Coldplay concluded their India concerts as part of their ongoing Music of the Spheres World Tour. The band thanked fans for their warmth and affection throughout their two-week stay.

Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion began their India tour in Mumbai on January 18, where they performed three shows, before heading to Ahmedabad for two more concerts on January 25 and 26.

Known for hits such as “Hymn for the Weekend”, “The Scientist”, “Clocks”, “Yellow”, and “Speed of Sound”, Coldplay had previously performed in India in 2016 at the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai.

On the occasion of India’s 76th Republic Day on Sunday, Martin performed a rendition of AR Rahman’s iconic patriotic song “Maa Tujhe Salaam”, wishing the nation well.

The concerts also attracted several prominent personalities, including film stars Kartik Aaryan, Suhana Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, Kajal Aggarwal, Vijay Varma, and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

In a memorable moment during the concert, Chris Martin dedicated a song to Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah. With a playful remark, Martin shared, “O Jasprit Bumrah, my beautiful brother. The best bowler in the whole of cricket. We did not enjoy watching you destroy England, wicket after wicket,” as he sang the song, a clip of which was shared on Disney Hotstar’s Instagram account.
