New Delhi: On January 29, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath made an appeal to the thousands of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh, urging them to adhere to guidelines, cooperate with authorities, and ignore any circulating rumors.
In his statement, CM Yogi advised pilgrims to use the Ganga ghats nearest to them for bathing instead of trying to access the ‘Sangam Nose’ area. He emphasized the availability of multiple ghats and encouraged everyone to avoid overcrowding while following the instructions from the administration to ensure safety and order.
The CM’s message, shared on social media platform X, reiterated: “Take bath at the ghat of Mother Ganga near which you are, do not try to go towards Sangam Nose. Everyone should follow the instructions of the administration for a smooth experience.”

In response to a recent stampede-like incident during the event, PM Narendra Modi reached out to CM Yogi for an update and urged the implementation of immediate support measures. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda also offered their assistance, with Nadda assuring full support, including volunteers and healthcare services, to help manage the situation.
A crowd diversion plan was enacted, halting entry for devotees, and groups were stopped on the outskirts of the city as the crowd swelled in anticipation of the ‘Amrit Snan’ on ‘Mauni Amavasya.’
The early morning chaos was triggered by a large influx of pilgrims seeking a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya, leading to injuries among at least 30 women who are currently receiving treatment at a central hospital set up in the Mela area.
With expectations of around 10 crore pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh in a single day, the Uttar Pradesh government had heightened security measures in preparation for the ‘Amrit Snan.’
The incident unfolded about a kilometer away from the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, where a sudden surge caused barricades to collapse, resulting in panic among the crowd. Many women fainted in the commotion, contributing to the stampede-like conditions. Those injured were quickly transported to the nearby hospital within the Mela grounds, while more serious cases were moved to Bailey Hospital and Swaroop Rani Medical College for further treatment.
This year’s ‘Amrit Snan’ holds special significance due to the rare ‘Triveni Yog’ celestial alignment occurring only once every 144 years, which has further heightened devotion among the millions gathered for this spiritual ritual.
