Bengaluru: In a tragic incident, a 13-year-old boy named Dhruva took his own life by hanging at home in front of his younger sister. The event occurred on Tuesday night within the Byadarahalli police jurisdiction in Bengaluru.
Authorities believe that the boy’s suicide may be linked to his addiction to mobile phones. Dhruva lived in Ratnanagar, near Gollarahatti, on the outskirts of the city. The police reported that the incident happened while his parents were at work, leaving Dhruva and his 9-year-old sister alone.
In a disturbing turn of events, Dhruva removed his sacred thread, known as ‘udadaara,’ and attempted to hang himself using it from a ceiling fan. However, when he tried to do so, the thread broke, causing him to fall. His mother arrived home shortly after, at around 7 p.m., and rushed him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Initial investigations indicate that Dhruva’s sister did not alert anyone during the incident, likely due to her inability to comprehend the situation. The police noted that Dhruva frequently disregarded his parents’ warnings about spending too much time on his mobile device.
His father works in a bakery, and his mother is employed at a garment factory. The police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death, suspecting that he might have been influenced by content on his mobile phone. This incident follows a similar case in November 2024, where a 14-year-old boy died after being beaten by his father over mobile phone addiction, and another case in September 2024, where a 13-year-old boy in Hubballi also died by suicide after being told to stop using his phone.
