Washington: India and the United States are finalizing plans for an “early visit” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington this month, likely right after his attendance at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit in Paris on February 10 and 11.

During a phone call on January 27, PM Modi and US President Donald Trump discussed various topics, including the potential White House visit, highlighting the strong friendship and strategic partnership between the two nations.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that both sides are coordinating the visit to enhance the comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the US, with specific dates yet to be announced.

The visit aims to reinforce the deep ties between the two countries and the personal rapport between the leaders, marking PM Modi as one of the first foreign leaders to visit the White House during Trump’s second presidential term.

President Trump has expressed his commitment to strengthening the “great partnership” with India, building on the close relationship established during his first term.

Former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla emphasized that the groundwork has been laid for significant advancements in the relationship, especially ahead of Trump’s visit for the Quad Summit in India later this year. He noted that Trump’s current term offers unique opportunities for furthering bilateral ties due to his strong mandate and the mutual desire for collaboration.

Shringla also pointed out that issues such as tariffs can be navigated smoothly, thanks to the excellent relationship between PM Modi and President Trump. He highlighted the special chemistry between the two leaders, recalling successful events like ‘Howdy Modi’ in Houston and ‘Namaste Trump’ in Ahmedabad.

The January 27 conversation was the second discussion between the two leaders since Trump’s re-election, following an initial call in November 2024. Shringla remarked that their mutual respect and admiration lay the foundation for a substantial enhancement of the bilateral relationship, setting a positive tone for future high-level visits and decisions.
