New Delhi: In line with its ambition to become a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the establishment of three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in AI for education during the Union Budget presentation on Saturday.
With a budget of Rs 500 crore, this initiative aims to enhance AI research and its integration into the educational framework of the country.
The new Centres of Excellence will focus on cutting-edge research, the creation of AI learning tools, and fostering partnerships between educational institutions and industries. The objective is to prepare students with essential skills for future success.
“AI is revolutionizing industries globally, and India must take the lead in AI research and its practical applications,” stated FM Sitharaman. She emphasized that these CoEs will serve as innovation hubs, developing AI solutions tailored for educational purposes.
The CoEs will collaborate with leading educational institutions, research organizations, and private sector entities to create AI models addressing various educational challenges. This includes developing personalized learning tools, automated assessments, and AI-driven tutoring systems to enhance the student learning experience.
India is also set to introduce its own secure and indigenous AI model within six months at an affordable price. This initiative is timely, as India is recognized as a trustworthy nation, positioning it as a reliable source of ethical AI solutions in the future.
Supported by a state-of-the-art common computing facility, the IndiaAI mission aims to customize AI solutions for the local context, including support for Indian languages.
In addition to the AI centres, the government plans to enhance infrastructure at five IITs established after 2014, which will increase academic and hostel facilities, accommodating an additional 6,500 students. The IITs benefiting from this initiative include IIT Bhilai, IIT Dharwad, IIT Goa, IIT Jammu, and IIT Tirupati.
