Washington: America’s conflict with its neighbours has begun after Donald Trump’s decision to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced a 25% tariff on US imports worth $155 billion.

Trudeau said on Saturday that new tariffs will be applied to $30 billion worth of US wine and fruit imports from Tuesday, while tariffs will be applied later on $125 billion worth of imports. US tariffs are also being applied to imports from Canada from Tuesday.

Earlier, Donald Trump imposed 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico and an extra 10% tariff on China from February 1. Trump said that our threats are not just for bargaining. We have a huge trade deficit with these three countries.

Mexico also announced retaliatory action

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had instructed her economy minister to impose retaliatory tariffs and other measures. She flatly rejected Trump’s allegations that Mexico was linked to criminal organizations and said-

“Problems are not solved by imposing tariffs but by cooperation.”

Earlier on Friday, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said that Donald Trump will impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods from Saturday because these countries are supplying illegal fentanyl drugs to our country, killing millions of Americans.

Sheinbaum rejected this allegation of the White House and said-

“If the US government wants to stop fentanyl consumption, it must take action against the sale of the drug on its streets and money laundering.”

Sheinbaum claimed that in the past four months his government had seized more than 40 tons of drugs, including 20 million fentanyl doses, and arrested more than 10,000 criminals.

US free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico

It is worth noting that America has a free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. Under this, there is no tariff on any kind of import-export between these countries. Trump had signed the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Mexico and Canada during his previous tenure.

These three countries bought goods worth more than 1 trillion dollars (about 85 lakh crore rupees) from the US in 2023. At the same time, they sold goods worth more than 1.5 trillion dollars. According to the report, Trump’s tariff war will have the biggest impact on the auto sector, agriculture, technology, parts and components. After the imposition of tariff, the prices of these things will increase.
