Balrampur: In a significant milestone, the Jal Jeevan Mission has successfully provided clean drinking water to Chunchuna village, a Naxal-affected area in Balrampur, Chhattisgarh, marking the first time this has been achieved since India’s Independence. This initiative has benefited approximately 100 households, granting them access to safe and sufficient water.

The Jal Jeevan Mission’s objective is to ensure that all rural households in India receive safe drinking water through individual tap connections. Additionally, it emphasizes sustainable water sources through practices like greywater management, water conservation, and rainwater harvesting.

Pankaj Jain, the Executive Engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, spoke to ANI about the long-standing water issues in the region. He noted, “The village is situated in a remote area surrounded by forests and is close to the border. We executed this project under the Jal Jeevan Mission, ensuring a reliable supply of clean water for the villagers. We plan to develop sources in other villages that still lack access, aiming to provide water to them twice daily once the sources are established.”

Chunchuna village, located on the Chhattisgarh-Jharkhand border, has faced considerable difficulties in accessing clean drinking water. Previously, villagers had to travel long distances to collect water, which was a major inconvenience. However, the Jal Jeevan Mission has now equipped every household with taps, ensuring a continuous water supply.

“Before, we had to fetch water from far away. The Naxal influence made it difficult to dig boreholes due to poor road access. Now that the roads have been improved, water is supplied to every home 24/7,” Jain added.

This achievement reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the living conditions of rural communities. Residents have expressed their gratitude, noting the relief brought by the availability of clean drinking water. One villager remarked, “We used to bring water from far away. Now that the government has provided it, we feel greatly relieved.”

The Jal Jeevan Mission has made remarkable strides, with over 60% of rural households in India now having access to clean drinking water. The initiative has also empowered local communities, particularly women, to effectively manage and monitor their water supply.
