New Delhi: On February 2, Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP Convenor, strongly criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the BJP of engaging in “hooliganism” ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. During a press conference, he stated that citizens are being “beaten and thrashed,” highlighting incidents captured on video. Kejriwal referred to allegations made by AAP leader Sanjay Singh about assaults by BJP-affiliated individuals, and claimed that the Delhi Police have been unresponsive, citing “orders from higher authorities.”
Kejriwal asserted, “Home Minister Amit Shah has lost his temper, and just before elections, BJP is resorting to hooliganism. I urge Delhi citizens to share their experiences using #AmitShahkiGundagardi to stand against BJP’s intimidation tactics.” He also wrote a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, expressing concern over AAP workers in the New Delhi Assembly constituency being harassed and threatened by BJP members and the police.
He detailed instances of illegal detention and physical abuse of AAP volunteers, including a senior volunteer named Chetan, who was allegedly wrongfully charged and mistreated by the police, collapsing and requiring hospitalization. Kejriwal claimed that the Delhi Police are deliberately targeting AAP supporters to undermine their campaign and dissuade volunteers from engaging in election activities.
The Delhi Assembly elections are set for February 5, with vote counting on February 8. Historically, the Congress party faced setbacks in the last two elections, while AAP achieved significant success in 2020, securing 62 out of 70 seats, compared to BJP’s eight seats.
