Praggnanandhaa defeats Gukesh to win Tata Steel Masters tournament; second Indian to claim title

New Delhi: Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa defeated World Chess Champion D Gukesh in a tie-break to win the Tata Steel Masters 2025 tournament on Sunday. Praggnanandhaa has become the second Indian to win this title after Vishwanathan Anand. Vishwanathan has won this title five times (1989, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2006). He has been the joint.

New Delhi: Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa defeated World Chess Champion D Gukesh in a tie-break to win the Tata Steel Masters 2025 tournament on Sunday. Praggnanandhaa has become the second Indian to win this title after Vishwanathan Anand. Vishwanathan has won this title five times (1989, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2006). He has been the joint winner 3 times.

The winner was decided by a tie-break match played in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands on Sunday. Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa lost their last round matches. Gukesh lost to Arjun Erigesi in his last round. Praggnanandhaa was defeated by German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer.

After the last 13th round of the 14-player round-robin event, Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh had 8.5-8.5 points. After this, the winner had to be decided through a tie-break match. In this, Praggnanandhaa came back from behind and defeated Gukesh and won the title.

Praggnanandhaa became an International Master at the age of 10.

He is a resident of Tamil Nadu. He was born on 10 August 2005 in Chennai. His father Rameshbabu works as a branch manager in Tamil Nadu State Corporation Bank, while his mother Nagalakshmi is a housewife. Praggnanandhaa became the youngest International Master of chess in 2016 at the age of 10.

18-year-old Gukesh is the new world champion of chess, won the title at the youngest age

18-year-old Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh won the World Chess Championship title on 11 December 2024 in Singapore. He defeated China’s defending champion Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in the final. Gukesh has become the first player in the world to win the title at such a young age. Earlier in 1985, Russia’s Garry Kasparov won this title at the age of 22. He was awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in January this year. At the same time, in the Chess Olympiad played in September last year, Gukesh won the title for India by winning the final game in the open category.
