1.56 crore people will be able to vote in Delhi till 6 pm. About 13 thousand polling stations have been set up for this.
5 parties that were part of INDIA block in the Lok Sabha elections are contesting against each other in the Delhi elections. Among them, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress are face-to-face on all 70 seats.
Voting for 70 assembly seats in Delhi commenced early Wednesday morning, marking the 8th Assembly election amid heightened security measures. Polling began at 7:00 AM and will run until 6:00 PM, according to officials.
Delhi boasts 15,614,000 registered voters, comprising 8,376,173 males, 7,236,560 females, and 1,267 third-gender voters. Among them are 239,905 first-time voters aged 18-19, 109,368 elderly voters aged 85 and above, and 79,885 individuals with disabilities.
To ensure a smooth electoral process, approximately 97,955 personnel and 8,715 volunteers have been deployed, including 220 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), 19,000 Home Guards, and 35,626 Delhi Police officers. Measures for promoting inclusivity include 70 polling stations managed exclusively by women and another 70 run entirely by persons with disabilities. Additionally, 70 polling stations are dedicated to encouraging youth participation.
Voters can utilize an AI-based Queue Management System app, “Delhi Election – 2025 QMS,” available on the Google Play Store, to check real-time crowd levels at polling stations. Medical teams will be present for emergencies, and crèche facilities will be available for parents with young children. Colour-coded polling stations and a helpline number (1950) will assist voters in finding their designated booths and addressing election-related queries.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) aims for a third consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is determined to reclaim power. The BJP’s campaign, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has focused on criticizing AAP over alleged issues with Yamuna water and corruption. In contrast, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have held rallies accusing AAP of harming Delhi’s infrastructure.
On the eve of voting, Chief Electoral Officer R. Alice Vaz urged eligible voters to participate, highlighting voting as both a right and a civic duty. She encouraged citizens to come out in large numbers to fulfill their democratic responsibilities.
However, the 48-hour silent period before the elections was marred by controversy, with a BJP delegation filing a complaint with the CEO regarding alleged disturbances caused by AAP workers. They also claimed that a social media video circulated, showing an AAP worker with a weapon, was intended to incite panic among voters.
In Haryana, an FIR was filed against Arvind Kejriwal and others for statements related to Yamuna water and allegations against the Haryana government.
Prominent Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were among those who cast their votes at various polling stations. Former MP Sandeep Dikshit and All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba also participated in the voting process.
Earlier, AAP leaders Kejriwal and Atishi met with the Election Commissioner to address concerns about violence and hooliganism, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to meet during the silent period.
Key constituencies in this election include New Delhi, Jangpura, and Kalkaji. AAP, which currently holds over 60 of the 70 assembly seats, is campaigning on its past achievements. The New Delhi seat features a high-profile three-way contest among former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal (AAP), BJP’s Parvesh Verma, and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit. In Kalkaji, incumbent Chief Minister Atishi faces off against Congress’s Alka Lamba and BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, while Jangpura sees AAP’s Manish Sisodia contesting against Congress’s Farhad Suri and BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah.
