New Delhi: Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has raised significant concerns regarding the alarming faculty shortages at AIIMS institutions throughout India, describing the vacancy rates as “staggering.” In a post on the social media platform X, Ramesh referenced data from a recent Rajya Sabha reply from the Minister of Health & Family Welfare.

He reported that the vacancy rates for the seven operational AIIMS facilities—New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Raipur, Patna, and Rishikesh—ranged between 24% and 39%. Additionally, he highlighted serious faculty shortages in twelve cities with partially operational AIIMS-type institutions, noting vacancies as high as 59.5% in Rajkot and 54% in Bilaspur. Ramesh indicated that these figures reflect not only challenges in hiring qualified faculty but also raise concerns about the quality of education at these institutions.

He stressed that the enormity of these vacancies requires immediate government action, stating, “While the quality of faculty is a concern, the extent of these vacancies is staggering. It’s particularly surprising to see this situation at AIIMS New Delhi, the leading institution. The health minister must prioritize this issue without compromising on standards.”

In response, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare stated that filling these vacant positions is an ongoing process and outlined several measures being taken to address the issue. These include conducting the Centralized Nursing Officer Recruitment Common Eligibility Test (NORCET), the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) for non-faculty positions, and the Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI-CET) along with the Super Specialty (INI-SS) exams for Junior and Senior Residents at AIIMS.
