Amaravati: Pawan Kalyan, the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and leader of the Jana Sena Party, commenced a three-day pilgrimage to Kerala and Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. This journey is part of his initiative aimed at the “protection of ancient dharma,” known as ‘Sanatan Dharma Parirakshana.’
Upon arriving at Kochi Airport, Kalyan headed to the Sri Agastya Maharshi Temple for prayers. After this visit, he will travel to the Meenakshi Sundareshwara Temple in Madurai, and is set to explore several other temples in Tamil Nadu over the next two days. His itinerary includes stops at the Sri Parashurama Swamy Temple, Agastya Jeeva Samadhi, Kumbeshwara Temple, Swamimalai, and Thiruthani Subramanya Swamy Temple.
This temple tour comes shortly after Kalyan’s recovery from a viral fever and severe spondylosis. He initially intended to undertake a five-day journey, but due to health concerns, it has been reduced to three days.
Kalyan was unable to attend a meeting with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and other ministers on Tuesday, where discussions focused on Panchayat Raj and Rural Development. During the meeting, Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar mentioned Kalyan’s health issues. Naidu expressed concern about Kalyan’s well-being and attempted to reach him by phone, though he was unsuccessful.
Following the TDP-led NDA’s victory in June in Andhra Pradesh, Kalyan has been increasingly vocal about the need to safeguard ‘Sanatan Dharma,’ especially after concerns were raised regarding the quality of ghee used in Tirupati laddus. He previously engaged in a ‘praishchita deeksha’ regarding this matter and has called for legislative measures and a national board to protect Sanatan Dharma.
In a public address in Tirupati on October 3, 2024, he emphasized the importance of upholding secularism in a way that provides a uniform response to threats against any religion.
Kalyan’s visit to Tamil Nadu could stir political tensions, particularly given Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s vocal opposition to ‘Sanatan Dharma.’ In 2023, Stalin made controversial statements on the subject. Additionally, Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai is expected to join Kalyan during his trip.
