Chennai: A 43-year-old teacher at a private school in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, named Sudhakar, has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a Class 9 boy.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged under three sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after the boy developed health issues. Concerned about his condition, his parents asked him what was wrong, to which he revealed that Sudhakar had sexually harassed him.
The boy was treated for an infection at Royapettah Government Hospital. Initially, the K.K. Nagar police opened an investigation based on the parents’ complaint, which was later handed over to the Saidapet All-Women Police Station for further inquiry. In response to the allegations, the school administration has terminated Sudhakar’s employment.
This incident comes shortly after a 13-year-old girl from a government school in Bargur, Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, accused three teachers of rape. This case emerged in the first week of January, but it was only publicized on February 3 when school authorities visited the girl’s home to investigate her extended absence from school.
Tamil Nadu’s opposition leader and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) expressed his astonishment at the latest incident. He took to social media to criticize the DMK government for not ensuring student safety in government schools and urged Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to accept full responsibility.
BJP Tamil Nadu Chief K. Annamalai also condemned the assault, stating that sexual violence against women and girls has become a terrifying reality in Tamil Nadu.
