New Delhi: As the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report is set to be presented in Parliament today, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticized the government’s focus on introducing a politically motivated amendment rather than improving the existing Waqf Act. While Interview, Gogoi noted that several MPs have voiced their concerns regarding the constitutional oversights linked to this bill. He emphasized that there is already an act governing Waqf properties, and instead of enhancing its implementation, the government is attempting to push through an amendment without proper groundwork.

Gogoi stated, “When the Bill is discussed in Parliament, it will become evident how the government proceeded without adequate preparation.” Congress MP KC Venugopal also condemned the central government’s approach, claiming that the JPC’s conduct was inappropriate.

Earlier, BJP MP Jagadambika Pal, who chairs the JPC on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, announced that the committee would present its report today following six months of nationwide consultations. He explained, “The JPC was formed six months ago to facilitate a thorough discussion. We have compiled a report after extensive travel across the country, adopting 25 amendments across 14 clauses.”

Pal acknowledged that some JPC members felt their opinions were overlooked, but reassured that dissenting notes have been included in the report’s appendix, along with testimonies from relevant stakeholders. He mentioned, “Members who felt unheard were invited to submit dissent notes, which we have attached to the report. We will also present stakeholder records today.”

According to the Lok Sabha’s List of Business, Jagadambika Pal and BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal will present the JPC’s report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, along with evidence collected during the committee’s proceedings. The report was submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on January 30, 2025.
