New Delhi: Congress MP Imran Masood emphasized on Thursday that the unity of the INDIA alliance should not come at the cost of his party. He pointed out that several regional parties prefer Congress to remain sidelined. “The future of the INDIA alliance is a matter for everyone. It cannot be that Congress is suppressed,” Masood stated.

He further remarked, “Regional parties want Congress to take a back seat. We are open to collaborating on a national agenda, but we cannot dissolve our party.”

The INDIA bloc has faced significant challenges, particularly after a heavy defeat in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. In the recent Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress ran separately, despite being part of the alliance.

Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal mentioned on Tuesday that the alliance needs to convene and work carefully to resolve issues. He acknowledged that while Congress strives for cooperation and consensus, there are times when challenges arise, citing the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections as an example where Congress’s poor performance hindered the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ from achieving a majority. “Congress always aims to work together and move forward with agreement. However, there are difficulties at times. In Bihar, Congress was allocated seats but did not win, and RJD claimed they could not secure power because of Congress,” Sibal explained during a press conference.

The BJP recently achieved a decisive victory in the Delhi elections on February 8, securing a two-thirds majority. The ruling AAP faced significant losses, with a notable decrease in its representation in the 70-member assembly, while Congress continued its downward trajectory. Prior to this, the BJP also achieved strong wins in Haryana and Maharashtra, undermining the Opposition’s ability to maintain the momentum from the Lok Sabha election results.
