Kolkata: Noted singer and music director Pratul Mukhopadhyay passed away at the age of 82 due to age-related health issues at a state hospital in Kolkata on Saturday.
He had been receiving treatment at S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital for some time, with a medical board overseeing his care. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally intervened to ensure he received the best possible treatment and visited the hospital recently to check on his condition. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, Mukhopadhyay succumbed to his ailments at 10 a.m.
Interestingly, his passing coincides with the death anniversaries of two other iconic figures in West Bengal’s music scene, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay and Bappi Lahiri.
Born on June 25, 1942, in Barisal (now in Bangladesh), Mukhopadhyay’s family relocated to Chinsurah in West Bengal after the partition. He developed a love for music at an early age, composing his first tune for a folk song at just 12 years old, written by Mangalacharan Chattopadhyay. His deep appreciation for the Bengali language was reflected in his song “Ami Banglai Gan gai” (I sing in Bengali), and his passion for folk music shone through in tracks like “Ami dhan katar gan gai” (I sing the song of harvesting paddy).
In her message, the Chief Minister expressed her condolences, stating, “I met the late singer at the hospital where he was admitted a few days ago. His passing is a significant loss for West Bengal’s music community. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to Pratul Mukhopadhyay’s family.”
