New Delhi: The Coordination Committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi announced on Monday its decision to oppose the proposed Advocate Amendment Bill 2025. In a unanimous resolution, the committee has called for a complete strike from judicial work in all District Courts across Delhi on Monday. They view the bill as unjust and biased.

In a communication directed to lawyers, the committee encourages members to support this initiative to protect the dignity and independence of the legal profession. Judicial officers are also urged to refrain from issuing adverse orders on cases scheduled for that day in solidarity with the strike.

The Government of India has recently sought public feedback on the Draft Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which aims to enhance the legal framework in the country. The proposed changes to the Advocates Act of 1961 are designed to modernize and improve the regulation of the legal profession.

Originally enacted in 1961, the Advocates Act was established to regulate the profession, protect client interests, and raise professional standards among lawyers. It set up the Bar Council of India and State Bar Councils to oversee the discipline and conduct of legal practitioners nationwide.

Per a press release from the Ministry of Law and Justice, the government is committed to ongoing reforms, and the proposed changes aim to make the legal profession more fair, transparent, and accessible. The Department of Legal Affairs is working on amending the Advocates Act to address current challenges and meet the needs of a developing nation.

These amendments are intended to align legal education and the profession with global best practices, focusing on enhancing legal education, equipping lawyers for modern demands, and improving professional standards. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that the legal profession contributes to building a just and equitable society and advancing the nation, as stated by the Ministry.

In this context, the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, along with a comparison of current provisions and proposed changes, has been presented. The Department is inviting public comments and feedback as part of its consultation process on the draft amendments.
