Bengaluru: Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje has aggressively criticized the Karnataka Congress government, accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of harboring a “British mentality of divide and rule.” She called on the Chief Minister to focus on effective governance or resign from his position instead of blaming the central government.

During a press conference in Delhi, Karandlaje claimed that Siddaramaiah is attempting to fragment major communities in Karnataka, including the Lingayats, Vokkaligas, and Brahmins, into sub-castes, likening his approach to that of British rulers. She emphasized that there has been no significant development in the state and urged the Chief Minister to cease his accusations against the Centre.

Karandlaje expressed concerns about the rising prices of essential commodities, alleged that the Congress government failed to fulfill its promises, including the Gruha Lakshmi scheme intended to provide financial aid to women heads of below-poverty-line families. According to her, the scheme has not reached its intended beneficiaries, and other promises, such as free travel for women, have not been realized as bus services are reportedly stopped.

She questioned Siddaramaiah’s awareness of the issues facing these guarantee schemes, especially since he holds the Finance portfolio, arguing that his lack of knowledge undermines public trust. She also criticized the government’s failure to deliver 10 kilograms of rice to each BPL family despite the central government’s readiness to supply it at a lower cost, and noted that nine new universities have been closed without any clarification for students who obtained credentials from them. Furthermore, she highlighted that staff in the Revenue Department have not received their salaries.

In addition, Karandlaje accused the Congress government of implementing a new taxation system in Bengaluru, alleging that bribes are required for construction permits. She pointed to the recent metro fare hike, asserting that it was influenced by the state government and that the Chief Minister misled the public about the reasons behind the increase.

She claimed that law and order has deteriorated under the Congress administration, citing incidents such as police station attacks and maternal deaths in hospitals, and questioned why Siddaramaiah remains in power if the central government is held accountable for everything. Karandlaje urged the government to stop blaming Modi and emphasized the need for efficient governance or resignation, pointing out the tripling of essential goods’ prices under Congress rule.
