New Delhi: Atishi has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly following a meeting of AAP MLAs on Sunday, as announced by senior AAP leader Gopal Rai during a press briefing after the legislative meeting.
Rai stated, “The legislative party has unanimously decided to appoint Atishi as the leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly. During challenging times, Atishi has served the people of Delhi as Chief Minister. AAP is committed to being a responsible opposition.”
Atishi expressed her gratitude to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and the elected MLAs for entrusting her with this role. In her address to the press, she emphasized that AAP would ensure the BJP fulfills its commitments to women, highlighting that the promised scheme to provide Rs 2,500 to women was not approved in the first cabinet meeting under the new Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta.
“The people of Delhi have chosen AAP as the opposition, and a strong opposition knows how to voice the concerns of the public in the assembly. AAP will take on this responsibility. The BJP has made several promises based on which they received their mandate, and AAP will ensure those promises are honored,” Atishi stated. She specifically pointed out that Prime Minister Modi had promised the implementation of the Rs 2,500 assistance scheme for women in the first cabinet meeting, which did not occur. “It is AAP’s duty to hold the BJP accountable, and we assure the women of Delhi that we will fight for the Rs. 2,500 assistance,” she added.
AAP faced a significant setback in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, securing only 22 seats compared to the BJP’s 48 in the 70-member Legislative Assembly.
