New Delhi: The three-day session of the eighth Legislative Assembly of Delhi commenced today, February 24, with newly elected MLAs taking their oaths. Arvinder Singh Lovely from the BJP has been appointed as the pro-tem speaker by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. The pro-tem speaker oversees the proceedings temporarily until a full-time speaker is elected.
The oath-taking ceremony for the new members is scheduled for 11 a.m., followed by the election of the Assembly speaker at 2 p.m. According to the Assembly bulletin, the Lieutenant Governor will address the Assembly on February 25, after which the reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) will be presented.
On February 26, discussions on the motion of thanks regarding the L-G’s address will begin at 11 a.m., and later, the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly will be elected. Discussions on this motion will continue into the third day, February 27.
The BJP has nominated senior MLAs Vijender Gupta and Mohan Singh Bisht for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is set to propose Gupta for the Speaker role, with Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa supporting the motion today.
In a prior cabinet meeting, CM Rekha Gupta and Vijender Gupta discussed the tabling of 14 CAG reports and the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Delhi, promising to fulfill their commitments to the public. The AAP, which holds 22 seats, has appointed Atishi as the leader of the opposition.
