Kerala: Amid rising concerns over human-wildlife conflicts in Kerala, a tragic incident occurred in Kannur where a tribal couple, Velli (80) and his wife Leela (72), were killed by a wild elephant while gathering cashew nuts on their land, located just 600 meters from the Rapid Response Team (RRT) office. This incident has ignited protests among local residents.

In response, Forest Minister A K Saseendran has requested a report from Kannur District Collector Arun K Vijayan and plans to visit the farm and hold an all-party meeting at the Aralam grama panchayat later today. The Emergency Disaster Management Committee, led by the Kannur DC, has decided to grant a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the victims’ family, with Rs 10 lakh being disbursed immediately. The forest department has allocated Rs 10 lakh per victim, with an initial release of Rs 5 lakh each.

The increasing frequency of human-wildlife conflicts in the state has raised significant concerns. Authorities are actively working on measures to prevent such incidents in the future. In a related event, a tiger that had been roaming in Wayanad was found dead after attacking a woman named Radha, causing panic in the area. The Forest Department had labeled the tiger a ‘man-eater’ and imposed curfews in certain regions following the attack, while assuring that they are enhancing monitoring and deploying rapid response teams to address these issues.
