87 illegally held weapons surrendered in Manipur

Imphal: In response to an appeal from Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and collaborative public awareness efforts by the District Police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF, residents in Manipur have started to surrender illegally possessed firearms. On Tuesday, a total of 87 weapons were handed over by the public across several districts, including Churachandpur, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kangpokpi, Jiribam, and Imphal West.

Additionally, security forces conducted search operations in vulnerable areas of both hill and valley districts. A police report indicated the recovery of one pompi measuring 10 feet (likely 84mm), another pompi (possibly a 51mm improvised mortar), three pompi bombs (which were destroyed on-site), and three IEDs (approximately 5.5 kg) with detonators (also destroyed on-site) from the vicinity of H. Monjang village under the MRH police station in Tengnoupal District.

Earlier, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army, visited Manipur on Monday and Tuesday to assess the situation along the Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB) and to review ongoing border infrastructure projects in the state, as stated by the Ministry of Defense. During his visit, he met with Governor Bhalla, the State Security Advisor, the Chief Secretary of Manipur, and the Director General of Police of Manipur.

The DGMO focused on the operational readiness of the Indian Army, evaluated the security situation along the IMB, and discussed the current security dynamics within the state, especially in fringe areas. He emphasized a ‘whole of Government approach’ during discussions with key stakeholders, focusing on normalizing the security situation and the importance of enhancing border management and security infrastructure along the IMB. Lieutenant General Ghai’s visit underscored the cooperative efforts between the military and state officials to implement strategic initiatives aimed at fostering stability and improving the welfare of the people in Manipur.
