Pune: In a troubling development, a young IT professional in Pune was molested by her cab driver, who has since been arrested. The incident occurred on February 21, when the driver made inappropriate gestures at the woman through the front mirror. In a panic, she jumped out of the taxi and ran nearly two kilometers to report the incident at the Khadki police station. The accused, identified as Sumit Kumar from Uttar Pradesh, is now in police custody.
In a related incident, social activist Trupti Desai and her supporters attempted to block the convoy of Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam, who was en route to the Swargate bus depot where a recent rape incident occurred. They were quickly detained by the Pune Police.
Desai expressed frustration over the lack of action regarding the Swargate rape case, criticizing the police for not arresting the suspect and for only offering a reward for information about him. She stated, “Women are living in fear, and despite the government’s announcement of a 50% discount on state transport buses, safety is still a concern.” Desai emphasized the right of citizens to question elected officials and condemned the police’s inaction, warning that if the accused are not apprehended soon, they might feel compelled to take matters into their own hands.
