Washington: During a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday, US President Donald Trump interrupted Starmer while he was responding to a journalist’s question about Canada. Starmer stated, “I think you’re (journalist) trying to find a divide between us that doesn’t exist. We’re the closest of nations and we had very good discussions today, but we didn’t touch Canada,” to which Trump interjected, “That’s enough, thank you.”

Earlier that day, Trump announced he would maintain tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting March 4, citing concerns over the influx of illicit drugs crossing the US borders from these countries. He also confirmed that reciprocal tariffs would be enforced “with full force” on April 2.

On February 4, Trump had temporarily paused tariffs on imports from both nations for 30 days after claiming to have secured new commitments from them to enhance border security. He emphasized the ongoing issue of drug trafficking, particularly Fentanyl, stating, “Drugs are still pouring into our Country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels.” He noted that over 100,000 people died last year due to these dangerous substances.

Trump has pledged to combat the smuggling of drugs, especially Fentanyl, citing the devastating impact on families over the past two decades. He declared that until drug trafficking is significantly reduced, the tariffs scheduled for March 4 would proceed as planned. Additionally, he announced that China would face an extra 10% tariff starting on the same date, with the April 2 reciprocal tariffs remaining in effect. “Thank you for your attention to this matter. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” he concluded.
