Chamoli: Four Army choppers have been pressed into rescue operations to save eight people still trapped under snow in the avalanche that struck near Mana Village in Chamoli district of the state, district magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said on Saturday.
A total of 47 out of the 55 trapped workers have been rescued so far, he said The Chamoli District Magistrate further said four helicopters have arrived with the help of Centre and State governments have joined the rescue operations.
“Of the total 55 people, 47 have been rescued from Mana. We have brought seven people to Joshimath Hospital, and they are under treatment. They are under doctors’ observation. Three of them are stable…I hope that the remaining people will also be rescued soon.”
Officials announced on Saturday that 33 workers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), who were trapped under an avalanche near Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, have been rescued. State Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman stated, “33 workers have been rescued. Out of 57 workers, two were on leave, leaving 55 present at the site.”
Rescue operations are ongoing for an additional 22 BRO workers. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is actively monitoring the rescue efforts from his residence and remains in close contact with officials involved in the operations.
On Friday, the Uttarakhand government established helpline numbers for those seeking assistance or information regarding the avalanche. The Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) of Uttarakhand encourages people to use the helplines, which are managed by the state emergency operation center of the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken with Chief Minister Dhami, reiterating that the government’s top priority is to ensure the safe evacuation of those trapped in the incident. He said, “I spoke to Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Dhami ji, DG ITBP, and DG NDRF regarding the glacier burst in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. Our priority is to safely evacuate the people trapped in the accident.”
