Guwahati (Assam): Dr. Bhaban Choudhury has expressed concerns over the declining political situation in Assam under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government after being appointed as the acting state President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Assam. His appointment occurred during an Executive Meeting on March 1, following the extended absence of the party’s permanent president, Manoj Dhanowar, for personal reasons.

Upon taking office, Dr. Choudhury condemned the rising political violence, suppression of democratic protests, and orchestrated defamation campaigns targeting opposition leaders and their families. He specifically criticized the recent attack on Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, labeling it a troubling sign for the political future of Assam.

He accused the government of stifling opposition protests, placing leaders under house arrest, and fostering an environment that raises doubts about the legitimacy of a democratically elected government. “The BJP government is systematically undermining democracy by silencing dissenting voices. Regardless of their oppressive measures, the people of Assam will respond decisively in 2026,” Choudhury stated.

Dr. Choudhury highlighted the growing public discontent, pointing out the government’s failure to tackle pressing issues such as rising prices, communal tensions, environmental degradation from deforestation, and persistent flooding in Assam. “Public frustration is escalating daily, and in response, the BJP is deliberately fostering chaos to instill fear among the populace,” he added.

He further alleged that the BJP is employing fear tactics ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections to suppress public dissent. “If a double-engine government, which has complete control over the Home Department, cannot prevent lawlessness, it indicates that the situation is being intentionally manipulated for political advantage,” he asserted.

Additionally, Dr. Choudhury criticized the Biplab Sharma Report as politically motivated, arguing that the investigation disregarded crucial testimonies and favored the accused’s narrative, which lacks credibility even in the eyes of the judiciary. He described this as a clear attempt to undermine opposition leadership.

He also condemned the targeted defamation of opposition MPs’ and MLAs’ spouses and questioned the government’s inaction regarding more serious allegations, such as illegal coal mining in Umrangsu and the disproportionate assets of ruling party members. “The entire administrative apparatus is being misused for political vendettas,” he remarked.

In conclusion, Dr. Choudhury stated that under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, the BJP government has brought Assam’s political climate to an unprecedented low, transforming it into a battleground for personal rivalries rather than effective governance. “This trend poses a significant threat to the future of Assam’s political system,” he warned.
