Chamoli (Uttarakhand): Brigadier MS Dhillon, the Commander of the IBEX Brigade, reported that eight individuals lost their lives after an avalanche struck a Border Road Organisation (BRO) camp in Mana. In a video statement, Brigadier Dhillon noted that 46 people had been rescued and were undergoing treatment.
“On the morning of February 28, an avalanche hit a BRO camp in Mana. The Indian Army promptly initiated a search and rescue operation,” he said. “This operation was carried out around the clock for three days despite severe weather conditions. While 46 individuals were rescued and are receiving medical attention, tragically, eight lives were lost. We have recovered all the deceased,” Brigadier Dhillon added.
He conveyed the Indian Army’s deepest sympathies to the families of those who perished in this unfortunate incident. The successful rescue efforts were a coordinated endeavor involving the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, National Disaster Response Force, Border Roads, and the state government.
The search and rescue operation in the Mana area of Chamoli district has now concluded, following the avalanche that occurred on February 28. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased BRO workers on Sunday, while praying for the swift recovery of the injured.
In a statement to ANI, CM Dhami remarked, “The rescue operation has been ongoing for the past two days, and it is nearly complete. The 46 individuals who were rescued have been transferred from Badrinath to Joshimath, and some have been moved from Joshimath to AIIMS Rishikesh.” He added, “May they all recover fully. While some are no longer with us, we pray for the peace of their souls and for strength for their families to endure this loss.”
