Three days after the debate with President Donald Trump in the White House, the US has announced to stop military aid to Ukraine. According to a Bloomberg report, this order has come into effect immediately. Aid that has not yet reached Ukraine from the US has also been stopped. This includes goods that have reached Poland.
According to a White House official, the aid stopped to Ukraine will not be restored until President Trump is convinced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky really wants peace. At present, neither the US Defense Department nor President Trump has commented on the suspension of military aid to Ukraine.
Bloomberg has quoted a Defense Department official as saying that President Trump is reviewing whether Zelensky is trying to make peace with Russia. A Trump administration official told Fox News that this aid has not been stopped permanently.
According to the New York Times, this could affect the aid related to weapons and ammunition worth one billion dollars (8.7 thousand crores rupees). These were to be delivered to Ukraine soon.
After Trump’s order, that aid has also been stopped which Ukraine can use only to buy new military hardware directly from American defense companies. There has been no response from President Zelensky on the suspension of US aid.
A White House official told CNN that it is clear that the decision was taken due to Zelensky’s bad behavior. He said that if Zelensky tries to negotiate to end the war, then perhaps this ban can be lifted.
Foreign affairs expert Mark Cancian told CNN that the US decision to stop aid is going to have a huge impact on Ukraine. Trump’s decision has in a way ‘crippled’ Ukraine.
Cancian said that the stoppage of US aid means that Ukraine’s strength has now halved. Its effect will be visible in two to four months. For now, with the aid received from European countries, Ukraine will remain in the fight for some time.
He said that this decision means that Ukraine will now have to accept the peace deal under any circumstances. Cancian warned that the Trump administration can try many more ways to weaken Ukraine.
He said that the US can bring Zelensky to his knees by stopping the intelligence information given to Ukraine and stopping the training of the Ukrainian army.
The US has been a major supporter of Ukraine. In the last 3 years, the US has given arms, ammunition and financial aid to Ukraine in its struggle against Russia. According to reports, the stoppage of this aid will affect Ukraine’s defense capability. Ukraine may face difficulties in maintaining control over its territory.
