Chennai: Greater Chennai Police have arrested four people in two separate incidents as part of an ongoing effort to crack down on drug trafficking. Three men from Assam were arrested near Egmore railway station with heroin, morphine, and gutka after a tip-off. In a separate case, a man was arrested in Chetpet for methamphetamine peddling; he had been on the run in connection to an earlier operation.
The Tamil Nadu police are increasing efforts to combat methamphetamine trafficking, with statewide operations and special squads led by district police superintendents. They’re also monitoring gyms and health clubs due to reported methamphetamine use for pain management.
Tamil Nadu is a key transit point for international drug syndicates smuggling methamphetamine, often sourced from Myanmar, to countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Australia. In 2024, authorities seized a significant amount of methamphetamine. A Nigerian national was arrested in November 2024 for allegedly coordinating methamphetamine imports from Nigeria.
Methamphetamine prices vary greatly; it’s far more expensive in Chennai than in Manipur, and even more so in international markets. The drug is transported from Myanmar to Manipur, then smuggled by train to Tamil Nadu, and finally transported to coastal towns to be smuggled into Sri Lanka by fishing boats. Law enforcement is continuing efforts to dismantle these drug syndicates.
