Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court, on March 8, imposed a ban on all political rallies in the area surrounding Jadavpur University (JU) until March 13 due to ongoing tensions following an incident on March 1 at the university. A single-judge bench led by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh issued the directive, stating that no political rally would be allowed in the locality without prior court permission.

However, the court granted conditional approval for a scheduled rally by a BJP-affiliated student group on Sunday, which will be led by the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari. The rally will be restricted to a maximum of 750 participants, and its endpoint must be at least 100 meters away from the university’s boundary. The rally is permitted between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Justice Ghosh clarified that the rally is not strictly a student-led event and emphasized the importance of considering the security of the LoP. The court also directed the police to ensure no other political rallies are authorized during this period.

The incident at JU occurred on March 1 when Education Minister Bratya Basu’s car was reportedly stopped by students, leading to a scuffle. The students were protesting the delay in student council elections and claimed that Basu’s vehicle deliberately hit two students, causing them severe injuries. The Minister also sustained minor injuries and was briefly hospitalized.
