Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8 in Navsari, Gujarat, by engaging with ‘Lakhpati Didis’ and launching key initiatives to support women’s financial empowerment. The Prime Minister will attend the ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan’ at Vansi-Borsi, where he will distribute over Rs 450 crore in financial assistance to more than 2.5 lakh women across 25,000 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in the state.

During the event, PM Modi will interact with ten selected Lakhpati Didis and award certificates to five of them. A documentary showcasing the success of the Lakhpati Didi Scheme in Gujarat will be presented, alongside the launch of two new state-level initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s financial independence.

The ‘Lakhpati Didi Yojana,’ which was launched by PM Modi on August 15, 2023, aims to empower women entrepreneurs who earn Rs 10,000 or more per month and have an annual income of at least Rs 1 lakh through activities like agriculture, animal husbandry, and small industries. Around 1.5 lakh women in Gujarat have already achieved this milestone.

Nearly one lakh women from the Navsari, Valsad, and Dang districts will attend the event, with most of them being members of SHGs that have either achieved Lakhpati Didi status or aspire to do so.

Additionally, PM Modi will introduce two new initiatives—G-SAFAL and G-MAITRI—designed to uplift women from marginalized communities and promote rural entrepreneurship. The G-SAFAL (Gujarat Scheme for Better Livelihoods for Antyodaya Families) program, launching on March 8, will support women from Antyodaya families by providing Rs 1 lakh in financial aid and vocational training. This initiative will benefit 50,000 women over the next five years.

The G-MAITRI (Gujarat Mentorship and Acceleration of Individuals for Transforming Rural Income) scheme will encourage rural entrepreneurship by offering grants to startups focused on rural development. With Rs 50 crore allocated for this initiative, G-MAITRI will support over 150 startups and provide financial assistance ranging from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. This initiative aims to benefit over 10 lakh rural women and youth, fostering economic growth and innovation in rural areas.
