New Delhi: Alka Lamba, President of the All India Mahila Congress, along with other Mahila Congress members, organized a protest at Jantar Mantar on Monday, demanding the immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies.

The Congress leaders held placards with slogans like, “Kahe har bharat ki naari, abhi Lagu karo 33% hissedari” (Every woman in India is demanding the immediate implementation of 33% reservation). They urged the government to act swiftly in passing legislation that guarantees 33% reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislatures, allowing women to have a stronger presence in politics.

The 2023 Nari Shakti Vandan Act includes a provision that reserves one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. This aims to ensure that a significant portion of seats are specifically allocated for female candidates, boosting their representation in the country’s legislative bodies.

Although the constitutional amendment bill was passed nearly unanimously in the Lok Sabha and unanimously in the Rajya Sabha, its implementation will take time. This is due to the need for the next census and the redrawing of constituencies (delimitation) to determine which seats will be reserved for women. The reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will last for 15 years, with the possibility of an extension by Parliament.

In a related development, the Madhya Pradesh government recently approved a 35% reservation for women in all government service recruitments in the state. Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla told ANI, “The reservation for women in all government recruitments in Madhya Pradesh has been increased from 33% to 35%. This decision, taken earlier, has now been approved by the state cabinet. It’s a major step for women’s empowerment in the state.”

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed his happiness, stating, “Our government has been consistently working towards women’s empowerment, and I am glad we have taken steps like increasing the women’s reservation in state jobs from 33% to 35%. Our state is the first in the country to implement 35% reservation for women.”

Additionally, the Rajasthan government, led by CM Bhajanlal Sharma, had earlier approved a 33% reservation for women in the police department.
