Port Louis: On the National Day of Mauritius, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the nation’s highest honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. Thousands of people gathered in heavy rain to witness the historic moment as PM Modi accepted the prestigious award.

In his speech, PM Modi expressed his gratitude, stating, “This honor is not just mine, but that of 1.4 billion Indians. It reflects the centuries-old cultural and historical ties between India and Mauritius, and acknowledges our shared commitment to regional peace, security, and sustainable development. This is a symbol of the hopes and aspirations of the Global South.”

The award was presented by Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who announced the recognition in a historic gesture. Only five foreign dignitaries, including Nelson Mandela in 1998, have previously received this title. This marks the 21st international award bestowed upon PM Modi.

PM Modi dedicated the honor to the Indian ancestors who migrated to Mauritius, acknowledging their significant role in shaping the nation’s diversity and progress. “I accept this award with humility and gratitude. I dedicate it to those Indians who migrated to Mauritius and their descendants, whose hard work played a key role in the country’s development,” he said.

The Prime Minister also emphasized his commitment to strengthening the India-Mauritius Strategic Partnership. “I embrace this honor as a responsibility and reaffirm our dedication to elevate the India-Mauritius partnership to new heights,” he added.

Earlier, PM Modi met with Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam to discuss the full spectrum of India-Mauritius relations. They agreed to enhance their partnership to an “Enhanced Strategic Partnership,” focusing on areas like infrastructure, housing, digital technology, health, AI, capacity building, and sustainable growth.
