Imphal West (Manipur): Manipur Police arrested Yumnam Premjit Meitei, a 54-year-old resident of Kakwa Laiphrakpam Leikai in Imphal West, for his involvement in collecting money on behalf of the banned KCP (Apunba) outfit. The arrest occurred at a furniture shop located in Kakwa Asem Leikai. Authorities found a mobile phone, a side bag containing two receipt books, an Aadhaar card, and a seal in his possession.
Additionally, on March 10, security forces and police conducted search operations across the region, leading to multiple arrests and weapon seizures. Two members of the KYKL group, Pukhrambam Damol Singh (39) and Athokpam Surchandra Singh Khaba (42), were arrested in Bishnupur District, with two mobile phones and an Aadhaar card recovered from them. On the same day, Ningombam Bonbon Singh Shamu (45), an active member of the UPPK, was arrested from Imphal East District. He was involved in extortion and arms transportation, and police seized a .32 pistol with ammunition from him.
The northeastern state of Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023, sparked by clashes during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU), which demanded that the Meitei community be included in the Scheduled Tribe category. Following these ongoing tensions, President’s Rule was imposed in the state on February 13.
As part of the security measures, authorities have overseen the surrender of a large number of arms, including 349 firearms and 5,764 rounds of ammunition in Imphal East, and 115 grenades in Imphal West, the highest number to date. The deadline for surrendering illegal weapons was initially set for seven days but later extended to March 6. Authorities are now working to match the surrendered arms with those previously looted.
In response to the ongoing crisis, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman assured Parliament on March 11 that the government would provide necessary support for Manipur’s economic recovery. A supplementary demand for Rs 1,861 crore has been placed to assist in the rebuilding efforts.
