Srinagar: An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Kupwara district of North Kashmir on Monday. Officials confirmed that the clash occurred after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) based on intelligence about terrorists hiding in the Krumbhoora (Zachaldara) village in the Rajwar area.

As security forces closed in on the terrorists’ location, they came under fire, triggering an ongoing gunfight. Authorities reported that two to three terrorists are believed to be holed up in the area, and all escape routes have been sealed.

A joint team of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Special Operations Group (SOG) is conducting a coordinated operation to neutralize the terrorists. The area has been sealed off, with additional reinforcements deployed to ensure the operation’s success. Civilians in the vicinity have been advised to stay indoors and avoid the encounter site for their safety.

The situation remains active, with authorities monitoring the operation closely. Updates will be provided as the situation evolves, and security agencies may release further statements as more information becomes available.

Intelligence agencies believe that terrorists, allegedly directed by handlers across the border in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), have intensified their activities in recent weeks. Frustrated by the peaceful participation of people in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections, these terrorists have escalated attacks, including the recent killing of three civilians in Kathua, including a 14-year-old boy.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has held multiple security review meetings in Jammu and Kashmir since the beginning of 2025, issuing strong directives to ensure zero infiltration and adopt a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism. Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha has also conducted back-to-back security reviews and stressed the need to dismantle the entire terror ecosystem, targeting not just terrorists but also their supporters and financiers, including those involved in drug smuggling and hawala rackets.
