Hyderabad: A pregnant woman is in critical condition following an attack by her husband, who struck her with a stone in Hyderabad.
The distressing incident took place on the night of April 1 near a hospital, under the Gachibowli Police Station jurisdiction, but it only came to public attention on Monday.
The assault occurred right after the woman was discharged from the hospital. According to CCTV footage, the attack followed an argument between the couple. The husband, Mohammed Basrat, picked up a large stone and repeatedly hit his wife, Shabana Parveen, on the head. Believing she was dead, he then fled the scene.
Bystanders noticed Shabana lying injured and notified the police, who promptly transported her to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). Due to severe head injuries, she fell into a coma.
The couple had reportedly entered into a love marriage in October 2024; Basrat, an interior designer who had relocated from Vikarabad to Hyderabad, was living in Adityanagar. Shabana, originally from Kolkata, had been admitted to a private hospital on March 29 due to vomiting; she was two months pregnant. After her condition improved, she was released from the hospital on April 1.
Following their discharge, a conflict arose between them, during which Basrat was seen kicking Shabana. Once she collapsed, he brutally hit her with a boulder before escaping on his motorbike.
The Gachibowli Police have opened a case and conducted an investigation. Basrat has been arrested and has been remanded to judicial custody. Police confirmed they are continuing their investigation into the incident.
