A brutal murder in the name of unrequited love

What kind of environment is this creating? A tragic news came from the Punjab College of Law in Usma village, Tarn Taran, Punjab. In this incident, which occurred on Monday, a young man named Prince Raj, suffering from unrequited love, shot and killed his fellow student, Sandeep Kaur, in anger after she rejected his love proposal. A week prior, the young man had been rejected by the girl’s family, so he approached her again at the college.

The girl refused, saying she was already engaged and could not go out against her family’s wishes. Upon this, the boy pulled out a pistol and shot her in the head, then put the pistol to his temple and shot himself. The boy is undergoing treatment in critical condition. The girl’s mother is a widow with seven daughters and a young son. She washes dishes in homes to support the children. It was her dream to educate her. Sandeep Kaur wanted to study and become a judge. This unrequited love came in the way.

The young man became enraged when first the girl’s family and then the girl herself refused. While mobile phones are permitted in colleges in Punjab, how the young man managed to bring the pistol is a matter of investigation. The pistol was licensed by the boy’s father. The deliberate manner in which the young man murdered the girl cannot be described as a spontaneous act of insanity. It appears to be a well-planned murder.

This reflects the changing mentality of today’s age, where the answer to rejection in love relationships is a gun. As the world becomes more materialistic, the purity of love has diminished. Unfortunately, it has been replaced by violence and revenge.

Another question is: where do the young generation acquire weapons? How are they so easily available? Here, the young man had his father’s licensed pistol, but in most cases, young people commit crimes with illegal weapons, as was recently seen in the murder of Aam Aadmi Party leader Lucky Oberoi in Jalandhar. This environment must change.
