A new sports wave reshapes Punjab

Punjab’s sports landscape is undergoing a major transformation as Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s sports policy reshapes opportunities for young athletes and brings a renewed sense of purpose to playgrounds across the state. What was once a scattered effort to promote athletics has now become a structured movement that is giving direction to thousands of youths who once stood vulnerable to social challenges, including substance abuse.

At the heart of this transformation is the statewide initiative titled Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan. The programme has completed three successful seasons and has managed to turn sports into a mass movement with deep community participation. The idea behind the campaign is simple yet powerful. When sports become accessible, organised, and aspirational, young people naturally move away from harmful influences and return to the field with determination and discipline. The widespread participation recorded over the past three editions reflects how strongly the initiative has connected with families across rural and urban Punjab.

One of the most significant outcomes of the new sports environment in the state is the rise in competitive excellence. Punjab’s athletes have delivered impressive performances at national and international events. The state government has recognised and rewarded this achievement generously. A total of 168 sportspersons who shone at the Asian and National Games received prize money amounting to 33.83 crore rupees. The reward structure offers one crore rupees to gold medallists, 75 lakh rupees to silver medallists, and 50 lakh rupees to bronze medallists. This support has created a strong incentive system and has sent a clear message that excellence in sports is both valued and celebrated in Punjab.

Punjab’s presence at global sporting events has also strengthened. Nineteen athletes from the state represented India at the Paris Olympics. The group included ten hockey players who carried forward Punjab’s historical association with the sport. The Olympic bronze medallists were awarded one crore rupees each, and reserve players received fifteen lakh rupees each. This recognition not only honoured their achievements but also encouraged countless young players who now see a realistic path to international arenas.

Supporting athletes with disabilities has also been made a priority. Twenty two players preparing for the Paralympics were provided financial assistance of fifteen lakh rupees each. This backing has helped many of them access advanced training, nutrition, and equipment, ensuring that no one is left behind in the state’s sports revival.

The government’s approach does not stop at recognition and rewards. It extends to securing the long term future of players. Exceptional performers have been offered stable careers in public service. Seven athletes have been appointed as DSPs and four have been appointed to PCS positions. These appointments have a symbolic and practical impact. They demonstrate that sporting excellence can lead to respected and stable careers, and they encourage parents to support their children’s aspirations in sports.

Infrastructure development is another major pillar of the new sports policy. The state has launched an ambitious plan to build thirteen thousand modern stadiums. Work is currently underway on 3,083 of these facilities. These stadiums are expected to become hubs where children can access structured training, proper equipment, and professional coaching. The scale of the project highlights how the state aims to make sports a daily part of life in every block and district.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has often described Punjab as a land of natural sporting talent. He believes that if young people are given the right facilities, support, and opportunities, they can excel across disciplines. His vision for Punjab’s sports sector is rooted in inclusivity. Every child, regardless of background, should have the chance to step onto a field and discover the strength within. His statement that the goal of the policy is to give every youngster a new flight captures the spirit of the reforms.

The impact of the new sports wave is visible across communities. Youngsters are returning to playgrounds with greater enthusiasm. Coaches report that participation in training sessions is rising. Schools are giving renewed attention to sports activities. Parents are beginning to view sports as a practical career pathway rather than an uncertain hobby. This shift in mindset may prove to be one of the most lasting changes brought by the programme.

Punjab’s effort is not only about medals and competitions. It is about reshaping the social environment. The state’s push for sports is also part of a larger fight against drug abuse. When young people spend their time training, competing, and setting goals, they develop discipline and resist negative influences. The sports movement is thereby contributing to a healthier and more confident generation.

The growing sense of pride is also evident in local communities. Many villages celebrate the achievements of their athletes, encouraging more children to pursue training. Sports events are now drawing families who cheer for local teams and share a collective sense of identity and aspiration. These cultural shifts are creating a strong base for future progress.

Punjab’s sports model today stands as an example of what determined policy, strong leadership, and community engagement can achieve. The combination of infrastructure, financial incentives, professional opportunities, and grassroots mobilisation is reshaping the trajectories of thousands of youths. As Punjab continues to invest in its athletes and its facilities, it is steadily turning into a state where ambition meets opportunity and where sports are becoming a powerful channel for hope, discipline, and progress.
