AAP Government Wins Praise for Swift Flood Relief and Farmer Compensation in Punjab

Chandigarh, November 10: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has earned widespread praise for its compassionate and swift response to the floods that devastated several districts earlier this year. From emergency rescue operations to record-time disbursal of financial aid, Punjab’s flood relief model has been hailed as one of the most effective in the country.

Rs 20,000 Per Acre Compensation for Farmers

In a major decision taken during a state Cabinet meeting on Monday, the Punjab government announced compensation of ₹20,000 per acre for flood-affected farmers whose crops were damaged. The Cabinet also approved an innovative scheme — “Jisda Khet, Usdi Ret” — under which farmers will be allowed to extract and sell the sand that has accumulated in their fields after the floods.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who chaired the Cabinet meeting online from a Mohali hospital where he was admitted due to exhaustion, said this was the highest rate of compensation given by any state in India.

“Farmers can extract and sell sand from their fields if they wish to. The government stands with every farmer during this crisis,” he said in a video message after the meeting.

The CM also announced ₹4 lakh compensation for families who lost members in the floods and added that surveys would soon be conducted to assess the damage to houses and public infrastructure for further financial assistance.

Relief for Farmers and Loan Moratorium Announced

Recognising the financial stress faced by the farming community, the Mann government has extended the loan repayment deadline by six months for farmers who took loans from cooperative societies and state agriculture banks.

“No instalment will need to be paid for six months, and no interest will be added during this period,” the Chief Minister announced.

The government will also provide compensation for the loss of livestock, including cattle, goats, and poultry birds, ensuring that every affected family receives fair support. A comprehensive survey of damaged government properties, including schools, colleges, electricity poles, and power grids, will also be carried out.

Quick Response and Ground-Level Action

When the monsoon floods hit Punjab, the AAP government acted swiftly. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann personally monitored the situation, visiting flood-hit regions and coordinating with officials.

NDRF and SDRF teams were deployed for rescue operations, while food, medicine, and temporary shelters were provided to displaced families. The government’s quick mobilisation of resources and “Mission Flood Relief” hotline ensured prompt aid for those stranded in remote villages.

Transparency in Relief Distribution

Punjab’s flood relief operations were marked by transparency and technology-driven surveys. Using drones and field verification, the government ensured accurate assessment of crop damage.

Compensation was transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts, eliminating middlemen — a first for the state.
