AAP protests across Punjab after BJP MPs attend Sajjan Kumar’s funeral

Amritsar: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) held protests across Punjab to protest the participation of three BJP MPs at the funeral of Sajjan Kumar, convicted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. AAP workers attempted to surround BJP offices and leader’s event venues in several cities, including Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, and Bathinda.

Barricades broken, scuffle with police in Ludhiana

In Ludhiana, AAP workers broke police barricades while advancing towards the BJP’s Dana Mandi office. Police tried to stop them, leading to a minor scuffle. Workers from both sides clashed outside the BJP office. To control the situation, police confined the BJP workers inside the office.

Protests also held in Jalandhar and Amritsar

In Jalandhar, AAP workers reached the venue of BJP’s Punjab in-charge, Dr. Satish Poonia’s event. Police barricaded the area and stopped them outside the club. Meanwhile, in Amritsar, AAP workers attempted to surround the home of Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh, but police stopped them at the barricades. AAP workers also protested against the BJP in Bathinda.

‘The wound of 1984 can never heal’

AAP leaders stated that the 1984 anti-Sikh riots are a never-healing wound for Punjab and the Sikh community. They alleged that the presence of BJP MPs at the funeral of a convicted person hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. The AAP strongly criticized the BJP’s move, calling it a reflection of an anti-Sikh mentality.
