Abhishek Banerjee’s Aide Sumit Roy Moves Calcutta HC for Protection in 4 FIRs

Kolkata: Sumit Roy, an aide of Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, on Monday approached the Calcutta High Court seeking interim protection from coercive police action, including arrest, in connection with four FIRs registered against him by the West Bengal Police.

Roy moved a single-judge bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya, apprehending that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) could arrest him in the four cases.

He has also sought an urgent hearing in the matter. The first hearing is likely to take place later this week.

In his petition, Roy claimed that he has been cooperating fully with the investigation and argued that he should be granted similar interim protection in the four FIRs.

Roy Already Has Protection in Two Cases

Roy is already under interim protection from coercive action in two other cases — one concerning alleged illegal land grabbing and another related to a cash-for-jobs case.

In the illegal land-grabbing case, the Supreme Court granted him interim protection. In the cash-for-jobs case, similar protection was granted by a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court.

Roy was questioned by CID officials on Saturday and Sunday and was scheduled to appear before the agency again on Monday.

His latest plea comes amid concerns that he could be arrested in connection with the four other FIRs.

Police Had Issued Lookout Notice

Before the Supreme Court granted him protection in the alleged land-grabbing case, Roy had remained untraceable for a considerable period.

After receiving interim protection, he appeared before the CID for questioning in the case for the first time on August 8.

Earlier, a local court had issued an arrest warrant against Roy after police failed to trace him at his known addresses. The West Bengal CID had also issued a lookout notice against him.

In June, police teams conducted searches at the residence of Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata’s Kalighat area and at Roy’s in-laws’ residence in Serampore. However, Roy was not found at either location.
